The Hoplite Ring is inspired by the Greek soldiers who fought by utilizing the famous phalanx formation in battles. The beauty of hoplite warfare comes from the fact the phalanx is victorious because of the group, not the individual. The collective power of the phalanx meant fewer soldiers could defeat larger armies by working as a cohesive force. The hoplite phalanx is built on trust, communication, and camaraderie. As a hoplite, your shield protects half your body and half of the soldier standing next to you. Our Hoplite ring is intended to remind you that you are not alone and do not have to fight your battles by yourself. The power of the united few is mightier than that of the ununited many.
The Hoplite Ring features details inspired by infantry uniforms and shields. Tiered sandblasted arches of 14 karat recycled gold are capped with high-polish golden orbs. The eternity design can be worn alone or stacked. The wider profile fits snuggly, so I recommend ordering a quarter size up if you plan to stack it.
A note from the designer: I designed this ring in college. It was a doodle in my notebook. I remember sitting in my classics courses learning about how the hoplites, an army of primarily untrained common folk soldiers, grew to be the mightiest force in the Hellenic world because of well they worked together. My professor made a few of us stand in front of the classroom and hold fake shields to demonstrate how your shield protected you and the person fighting next to you, how each soldier protected and was protected. For whatever reason, it stuck with me. As I got older, the world around me continued to demonstrate how racist, misogynistic, homophobic, xenophobic, and bigoted it was. I always returned to that classics class, standing at the front of the room, protecting while I was being protected. Whenever I feel small, alone, hopeless - when I feel that the world is spiraling into a nightmare - I know there are so many people who feel the same way I do. There are so many people who will fight the same fight I will. And I know we are more powerful when we are united. This ring is for us.
