Persephone's Myth:
Persephone, daughter of Demeter, was abducted by Hades and forced into marriage against her will. Many people romanticize the myth—but make no mistake, Persephone did not choose her fate. Desperate to find her missing daughter, Demeter sent the world into fall and winter, denying the world crops and vegetation. Finally, Helios, the sun-god, told her what had happened. The world was hungry, and Zeus could no longer ignore the angry cries of the mortals. Demeter convinced him to force Hades to return Persephone. Hades, reluctant to lose his captive bride, tricked Persephone into eating pomegranate seeds before she left the underworld, meaning she could never permanently leave. Thus, we spend half the year without our goddess, as she descends to her captor and duties as Queen of the underworld. But every year, on the spring equinox, she returns home and brings with her life.
